Checklist for plumbing installations in the home
When plumbing problems occur suddenly, they can reach catastrophic proportions.
The places to focus your inspection list are the rooms where a lot of plumbing fixtures are located – the bathroom and kitchen. But don’t forget to check the other appliances and fixtures in the house, too, from the hose connections outside the house to the water heater in the basement or utility room.
Bathroom
The bathroom is used frequently by all family members, and it’s no surprise that this room is the most likely to have plumbing problems.
Faucets
Sink, tub and shower faucets are the most likely to need attention in the bathroom. Check them regularly for leaks. Replace defective seals or cartridges to fix dripping faucets. Water lines hidden in walls for tub and shower drains can be especially problematic, as such hidden leaks can cause major damage before you even notice them. Hidden water line leaks often reveal themselves through signs of water damage in the space below the plumbing lines. Observe the operation of faucets while running the water – if you notice weak water pressure or an erratic spray pattern, it may be because there is scale buildup on the aerator. Aerators can be removed and cleaned manually, or limescale deposits can be removed by soaking in vinegar.
Drains
Instead of waiting until they are completely clogged, clean the drain regularly with boiling water or another homemade method, use a drain blocker, and remove hair and debris from the tub or drain blocker promptly.
Toilets
A toilet has many working parts, and any one of them can wear out and cause problems. A toilet that keeps running instead of shutting off at the end of the flush wastes a lot of water. Fixing a running toilet is often surprisingly easy.
