How to repair a toilet with low flow

A common problem with a low-flow toilet is that the waste won’t drain. You will notice that the flush is slow and not everything flows down. Then you have to wait for the tank to fill and flush again. This can be disgusting and frustrating. A low flow toilet is usually caused by a lever linkage that is too long or a bent flapper valve, which can be easily repaired.

Open the toilet

Lift the back of the toilet and place it so that it cannot fall and break. Lift the toilet and look inside. You will see many simple parts. At the bottom is the flapper valve, which has a chain attached to it. The problem is the chain or the check valve.

Check the chain

First, check the chain. The chain is connected to the purge arm. The flush arm is attached to the handle that you use to flush the toilet from the outside. When the handle is pushed down, the flush arm is raised. The chain must have some slack so that it can be pulled up by the arm. It should not have more than an inch of slack.

Adjusting the chain

Flush the toilet under observation. If the chain has too much slack when flushing and the flapper does not lift quickly, adjust the chain at the end of the flush arm. With most chains, you can simply take one of the links and hook it into the metal hook that attaches the chain to the flush arm.

Check flapper valve

Another problem that can cause a slow-flowing toilet is the flapper valve. To replace the flapper, you’ll need to shut off the flow of water to the toilet. The water valve is located at the back of the toilet, at the bottom, near the wall.

Lift the flapper and look at the bottom. You can remove the check valve along with the chain. Loosen the chain at the end where the purge arm is located. Take the check valve to the hardware or plumbing store. Purchase a replacement valve and take it home.
