Times when you should call a plumber

Many plumbing repairs can be done on a DIY basis. If your water pressure is low, you can clean the shower head, check the water meter valve, or make several other simple repairs. If the trap under the sink in your kitchen or bathroom is leaking, you can tighten the existing trap or buy a new, inexpensive trap. But with so many easy-to-perform repairs, how do you determine when to call in a plumber?

You have a quick leak in your water supply line

While this doesn’t happen often, it does happen occasionally. When it happens, you need to be ready to act quickly.

First, look for an intermediate water supply shutoff valve located near the leak. If you’re lucky, you’ll find either a knife (ball) valve or a knob valve that only shuts off the water supply to the leak and not the whole house. If this is not the case, find your home’s main water shut-off valve and turn it off. After you turn off the water, find a plumber who can come right away.

You have no water in your house

When water stops flowing in your home, it’s usually limited to a specific area, such as a sink or shower in the bathroom. However, it’s rare for water to stop flowing in the entire house.

Check all water outlets in the house to make sure none of them are receiving water. If there is a problem with the water heater and no more hot water is being delivered, the cold side is often still functional.

If you still can’t get the water running, you may have a serious problem. It’s possible that the underground water line leading from the street-side water meter to your home has burst or been cut, diverting the water destined for your home. Or the leak may be around the water meter.

You have a leak in your drain line

If your kitchen sink or bathroom sink is leaking from the trap just below the counter, it’s a fairly common problem that most homeowners can fix with simple tools and materials. Simply turn off the water, go under the sink and replace the trap. In kitchens, the leak may be coming from the garbage disposal. In this case, repair or replace the garbage disposal.
